My testimony
When I hear the word “testimony” I immediately think of my salvation story.
My true testimony, evidence of God working in my life is so much more than that. Most days I wear four bracelets with words or phrases that are important to me. One of these says “Be Still and Know.” Stillness is not something that comes naturally to me. But sometimes, we have no choice but to be still and let God be God. Let him work in ways we don’t understand, knowing that His plan is always perfect to bring glory to His name.
18 years ago I had a one-year-old son when I learned I was pregnant with two more boys. If twins weren’t enough of a surprise, my husband and I then learned around 20 weeks that one of the boys had a heart defect and the other had a hole in his intestine. We were counseled by the fetal surgeon to “reduce the pregnancy” to give one of the boys a better chance of survival. We chose to pray for healing. We named Baby A Landon and Baby B Nolan so that our friends and family could pray for them by name. People around the country, and even in other parts of the world, were given the opportunity to pray for these boys and to watch God work. Jack and I were at peace. We had complete confidence that God would heal these boys and at the same time, we were confident that if He chose not to there was a reason for that. Psalm 46:10 says “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” We usually hear the first sentence and think of it as a peaceful reminder to His followers that He is with us, and He has everything under control. However, the Psalm was written during a time of war. In context, we hear Him telling our enemies to be still. He is saying to our enemies, “You will no longer harm my people!” He is telling His followers to put down their weapons of war and stand in awe of Him and His mighty power! Weekly we heard the cardiologist tell us that Baby A’s heart was worsening. We continued to pray with faith, but also with the peace that God’s will would be done in and through these little lives. Finally we were told that we did not need to schedule any more appointments. Baby A would not survive. That is what the medical professionals said. That is not what God determined! Ten weeks after the initial diagnosis our perinatologist did a routine exam and noted that Landon was still growing. She sent us for another echocardiogram. The cardiologist was watching the video of the test from a nearby room. She burst through the door of the dark imaging room and exclaimed, “I had to see your face because I can not believe that is the same baby’s heart!” Landon’s heart continued to heal, Nolan’s perforated bowel and under-developed lungs were completely normal by delivery.
My miracle boys are 17. Not to be outdone, their younger sister was delivered by my mom during a very quick and unplanned home delivery. Every day I thank God for the lives of my children. I am in awe of His sovereignty. I have so many more examples in my life of God reminding me that He is in control. Some are in the small day-to-day things, others are big and bold and life-changing. I wish I didn’t need such frequent reminders to be still, but I am thankful that I know He is God!
