Fit Faith
What does it mean to be fit in your faith? Well, it means the same as being fit in your body. It takes
discipline, dedication, priority – making the right choices.
There was a time in my life when I was spiritually overweight. I’m not talking about being super-spiritual
where everything is joyful and my armor is all polished and ready for warfare. Bring it on dirty devil
because nothing-can-phase-me type of spiritual. Just the opposite. I was weighted down with
unhappiness, sorrow, pleasing people, making sure my life looked perfect when it was wasn’t, and the
list could go on. None of it was profitable for serving Him. I looked to others for answers instead of
praying to God. I knew how to act like a Christian, but looking back, I didn’t know how to always BE one.
I had become spiritually flabby. Then, one day, as I called a friend during a moment of emotional
meltdown, she asked me what I did before calling her. I didn’t know why she was asking until she asked
one simple question, “did you read the Word and pray before calling me?” The answer was “no” and she
told me to hang up and do those things before calling her back. That’s a true friend.
She pointed me back to my fitness routine for my spiritual health. God has given us the instruction
manual on how to be fit to serve within the Body of Christ. We need to have the discipline and
dedication to exercise our spiritual muscles by studying the Bible, praying to God through Jesus, and
listening for His voice and instruction. He is our personal trainer through life.
1 Timothy 4:8-9 (MSG) “Exercise daily in God-no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium
are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can
count on this. Take it to heart.”
Abba Father, I pray that we see that our first priority is You, and that as we wake up every morning, we
seek You first. Train us to exercise our faith so that others may see Your glory and Your hand at work to
give hope and light to a dark and broken world. May our hearts be healthy with the love and joy that
only You can bring. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
