Rooted…lessons from teaching Science Class

When Eli was in Kindergarten, I remember one of his Science lessons was learning about roots. We discussed how the roots of a plant help the plant in a few ways. The first way was to help bring water into the plant. The second way that roots help the plant is that it helps provide stability. As the plant grows, so do the roots. Eli wanted to learn more about what roots looked like because I explained to him that we typically are not able to see what is happening with the seed because it is underground.
One Spring day, we picked up a packet of seeds and brought them home from the store. We then grabbed a sandwich bag and wet paper towel. We then taped the bag on our window, so Eli could watch to see what would happen to the seed. After a few weeks, Eli was excited to see the changes that were taking place with the seed and to see the roots that were growing. That was when the lesson that he learned in Science class started making sense to Eli.
During first grade, Eli started learning more about plants and roots specifically. One lesson that stood out to me that I never realized was that in order for the seed to grow and the roots to come out of the seed, not only does the soil provide a place to put the seed and give it nutrients but it also puts pressure on the seed. It was only when the soil put pressure on the seed that it was able to grow.
It wasn’t until this lesson that I realized that these lessons that Eli had learned in his Science class were applicable to our lives and our walk in Christ as well. As Colossians 2:7 (NLT) says- “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
When we have pressure added to our life, it helps us grow stronger. As long as we are growing our roots deep into God. How do we do this? You study his word, you spend time with God, your roots start to grow. When the pressures of this life happen and come, or when the storms of life come, our roots are deep and God provides the stability that we need so that we do not crumble under the pressure of being “planted”.
